Sail Safe for schools
SailSafe is a yachting awareness and water safety programme developed by Yachting New Zealand for use in New Zealand primary and intermediate schools.
SailSafe is a completely self-contained teaching package, containing five units of work focusing on one of five major curriculum areas (curriculum levels 3 & 4). Each module has a lesson plan, assessment suggestions and eight student activity cards. The activities are designed for an age range of 8 - 12 years. Each card has a title and a heading statement, and is followed by a series of related questions and projects.
One of the strengths of the SailSafe programme is the promotion of links between the school and its community. Getting to Know Yachts involves members of the local yacht club in assisting students and teachers with organising a mini-regatta using radio controlled yachts. The students are then encouraged to visit the yacht club to participate in various sailing activities specifically organised by the club.
NCEA Credits
The NCEA sailing unit standards have now been approved by NZQA. Credits can be used to meet the requirements of qualifications on the National Qualifications framework including NCEA.
NCEA sailing offers teenagers and other adults the opportunity to learn to sail. The course can be delivered by Elements Watersports which the student’s school has an arrangement for delivery of the course.
The intention has always been to align the syllabus with the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail Syllabus. There are two streams available, dinghy and keelboat. In both streams there are units on safety, basic principles, and on the water sailing. The Basic principles unit is common to both dinghy and keelboat streams.
